It is recommended that you live in Canada for at least 6 months before applying for a Non-immigrant U.S. visa (NIV). In order to apply for a NIV, please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Ensure that your passport is valid for 6 months beyond your intended stay in the United States. and both stamped copies of your receipt must be brought to your appointment, or it will be cancelled.


Step 2: Pay the application fee of US $140.00.  This must be paid online, by phone or at any Scotiabank branch


Step 3: Fill out the Non-Immigrant Visa application form DS-160 on-line.


Step 4:  You must book an appointment for an interview to apply in person at the U.S. Consulate general. Once you have booked your appointment, please print out your appointment letter as you will bring this with you to your appointment


Step 5: You must purchase a status letter from the Registrar’s Office ($7.00)


Step 6: Print out an unofficial transcript from ROSI as you may need to show the officer from the U.S. Consulate

Step 8: Original (no photocopies) proof of current visa/immigration status in Canada (Passport and current study permit) must be brought to the appointment


Step 9: Students are recommended to make a copy of their passport for their records and provide a copy of the study permit to the officer from the U.S. Consulate


Step 10: Go to a store that provides Passport Photos, and have them take two photos (2” x 2”) – color against a white background; sign your name on the back of one copy and take it to the appointment


Step 11: Ask your bank to provide you with a proof of funds (i.e. customer portfolio, bank letter or bank statement)

DO NOT BRING THE FOLLOWING TO THE APPOINTMENT:

  • Electric or battery powered equipment, cameras, cell phones, foods, liquids, or bulky or dangerous articles of any kind
  • Anyone not applying for a visa. Applicants not fluent in English may bring one translator or helper, who must have a government-issued photo ID
