As an international student, you can apply for an Off-Campus Work Permit to supplement your income and gain valuable work experience while studying in Canada.
Remember!: The Off-Campus Work Permit (OCWP) is the first part of working off-campus.  If you are granted an OCWP, you still need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) card so that you can legally be paid!

As an international student, it is illegal to start working before you have received your Off-Campus Work Permit.

Eligibility:

  • have a valid Study Permit
  • have studied full time for at least 6 months out of the last 12 months preceding the application
  • maintain satisfactory academic standing (≥1.60 cGPA)
  • continue to be registered as a full-time student at a public post-secondary institution

The Off-Campus Work Permit allows you to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week while classes are in session, and full-time hours during scheduled breaks (e.g. reading week, winter holiday, semester off).

It is your responsibility to maintain good academic standing while working. If you are no longer a full-time student, or if your cumulative GPA falls below 1.6, you must surrender your Work Permit to a local Citizenship and Immigration Canada office immediately.

Step 1: Getting your Electronic Verification Number (EVN)

To confirm your eligibility for the OCWP, you will need to create or login to your MyCIC account. You must submit your EVN request electronically, and it should usually take about 1 week to process (however, it can take up to 28 days). Once  it has been approved, you will be notified to check your MyCIC account.  Your EVN will be valid for 60 days, so you must complete the rest of your application in that time.

Step 2: Gathering your documents

You will need to review the Application Guide and gather your documents in the listed formats, depending on whether you would like to submit your application online or in paper by mail. To decide which format is best for you, please consult the CIC website for Processing Times.
