All Canadians are covered by a provincial health insurance that will cover basic doctor and emergency hospital visits without the need to pay upfront for these services.  As an international student in Ontario, you are not eligible for enrollment into the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), but all Ontario universities require international students to be enrolled in a health insurance plan.

UHIP: The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is mandatory for all international students.  You will automatically be enrolled and charged for this on your ROSI account. It is your responsibility to pick up your UHIP card every year.  Please ensure that you read and understand what UHIP covers and how to make a claim.

Other U of T Health Insurance Plans: When you enroll in courses, you will also be automatically enrolled in an extended Health & Dental Plan offered by the student union to which you belong.  Full-time undergraduate students are enrolled in the SCSU plan, part-time undergraduate students are enrolled in the APUS plan, and graduate students are enrolled in the GSU plan. Please ensure that you read and understand what your student union Health & Dental Plan covers and how to make a claim. If you are on a co-op work term, you are not enrolled and must manually enroll in your Health & Dental Plan.

After you graduate: If you choose to stay in Canada to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit after you graduate from U of T, you will not be permitted to enroll in either UHIP or a student union health insurance, and you will not be eligible for OHIP until you have your PGWP and an offer of a full-time job for a minimum of six months. While you are waiting, you should consider enrolling in another, private health insurance.

On suspension from U of T: If you are on suspension from U of T and are not enrolled in any classes, you will not be permitted to enroll in either UHIP or a student union health insurance. You should consider enrolling in another, private health insurance.

Becoming a Permanent Resident in Canada: If you have submitted an application for permanent residence in Canada, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada has confirmed that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence in Canada, you will be eligible for OHIP .  Once you have been enrolled in OHIP, you can apply for a refund of your remaining UHIP coverage.
